Gimme a Hole in the Ground

The Burrowing Owl

“Hey! How do I get out of this very large burrow?”

Dorsal Wing Plumage

(Above) One of our Burrowing Owl patients was found in a condominium parking garage with a badly broken wing. Dr J. Sorem of WildCare was able to surgically repair the fractures and after a good recovery, the owl was released in suitable nearby habitat.

In 2024 we rescued four of these charismatic little, long-legged, ground-dwelling Owls, all from surprisingly urban environs: a condo parking garage, a warehouse, an artist’s studio, a sidewalk in a dense residential neighborhood.

Two were fit and released on site, and two were taken to WildCare in San Rafael for rehabilitation.

This species, suffering from widespread habitat loss due to human development, is now under consideration for listing on the endangered species list.
